Skillful Touch Practitioner

My name is Jason Sager and I am a Skillful Touch practitioner currently in training at the Rolf Institute in Boulder, CO. I am currently accepting a limited number of clients while working my way through school. I am not yet a licensed bodyworker in North Carolina but have been practicing for nearly a year while pursuing this extended training program.

About Skillful Touch

The modality of bodywork I am currently practicing is called Skillful Touch. The work focuses on manipulating soft tissue to restructure the body and allow for improved range of motion and realignment. Unlike spa type massages which focus on muscle and relaxation, Skillful Touch focuses on connective tissue and is focused more on stretching and release of tension.

The work is slow, methodical, and deep. It is useful for those experiencing chronic pain from muscle injuries or patterns of use and tension. It can also be useful for performance, athletics, dancing, practically any physical vocation as a way to help improve performance.

About me

My interest in Rolfing started about 4 years ago when a friend was involved in a car accident. She had fairly intense shoulder pain afterwards that regular shoulder rubs, etc. could not alleviate. She was referred to a Rolfer and after 3 sessions was virtually pain-free. She thought I would be a good Rolfer, but at the time I was not in a place where I was ready to pursue such a drastic change from computer programming to bodywork.

Over the past 5 years I have developed a very strong interest in body mechanics through my participation in the Raleigh swing dancing scene. I have taught Lindy and East Coast Swing for the past 3 years and have a strong sense of movement and ability to analyze people's movements as a result.

I have spent a lot of time working on my posture for dance over the years and around the beginning of 2007 I had hit a point of diminishing returns. No matter how much I stretched it still meant a sustained effort to fully stand up straight, so I decided to try Rolfing. After my first session I was hooked and pretty much immediately decided that I would pursue it as a career.

I completed the first of 3 units of training at the Rolf Institute in Boulder, Colorado between August and October of 2007 and am now back working in Raleigh until my next unit at the end of March 2008.
